Hotel Rugs
The Most Common Types of Hotel Rugs and How They Can Dramatically Improve Your Room

Today’s hotels are increasingly interested in offering a more personalized and memorable experience for their guests. Part of that comes from designing each individual room with a particular theme or aesthetic in mind, but another big piece of the puzzle is adding small touches of luxury to each space. Small touches like an expertly-placed rug! There are many different kinds of rugs that can be used in a hotel room, and some can be more useful than others depending on the type of room you’re trying to design. Here are the five most common types of rugs used in hotels today as well as some pros and cons for using them in your property.
Persian Rugs

If you’re designing a Persian/traditional-themed room, then a Persian rug will likely be the most appropriate choice. As the name suggests, these rugs are particularly popular in Iran, but they’re also very common in other Middle Eastern countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as parts of Central Asia and the Caucasus. Because Persian rugs are so heavily associated with Middle Eastern culture, they’re not always the best choice for a hotel room. If you’re designing a room around a Middle Eastern theme, then a Persian rug would be a great choice, but if you’re trying to incorporate a bit of Persian flair into a room that’s meant to represent a variety of cultures, a Persian rug may not be the best option.
Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs are quite similar to Persian rugs in that they are very heavily associated with Middle Eastern culture. In fact, many people would consider the two types of rugs to be essentially the same thing, albeit with slightly different design features. Because Oriental rugs are so heavily associated with Middle Eastern culture, they’re not usually the best choice for a hotel room with a more general theme, but they can be great for rooms that are designed around that specific region.
Indian Rugs

Indian rugs are very common in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of South and Central America, so they’re a great choice for hotels with a more South Asian theme. If you’re designing a hotel room that is meant to represent a South Asian aesthetic, then an Indian rug would likely make the most sense. Indian rugs are also very commonly used for guest room, presidential suite, lobby, reception area etc.
Contemporary Rugs

Contemporary rugs are designed more as art pieces than functional pieces of the hotel room, and they can be a great way to inject a bit of modern flair into any space. Contemporary rugs are ideal for rooms that are designed around a more modern aesthetic, but they can also be a good choice for rooms that have a more general aesthetic as well. You can place a contemporary rug in a room that represents a specific culture and it will likely still fit in nicely, but it will also introduce a more modern element that can make the room feel a bit more fresh.
The Bottom Line
No matter what kind of hotel rug you choose for your room, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s not just an aesthetic choice. Rugs are functional pieces of furniture and they serve a very important purpose in any hotel room. Any type of rug you choose for a hotel room should be able to withstand heavy foot traffic; otherwise, it can cause potential safety issues for both guests and hotel staff. Also, remember to consider what type of rug is easiest to clean and maintain. Rotating rugs regularly and cleaning them as needed can help to extend the life of your room’s most important piece of furniture.
